What is Education
Updated: Oct 1, 2023
In the current global market, people have come up with new innovations that make their lives easier but at the same time challenging due to lack of information and knowledge of what is happening around them. The way people go through a lot of complications in their day-to-day life is because they have not learnt that whatever happens around them is related to their life and education. It will be impossible for schools to teach all children well on what to do if the environment is not conducive for learning. Education plays an important part in the social, economic and political status of any country in the world. Through education young populations are taught about the culture of other nations to help build the confidence and character of the person. Education is also used as a tool of teaching skills like reading fluently, writing, solving problems and even the basics of using computers, languages and the internet to make the life of a student more comfortable (Sterner 23). However, many children are left uneducated and this leads to the development of various causes of crime like drug abuse. There is need for educating these people so that they can get the best outcomes from school. This paper analyzes some of the issues associated with poor quality of education. Some of the issues will include poverty of the family, gender difference and unemployment. In addition, some of the issues will be explained from a personal perspective and some will be based on research. Poverty of Family Education forms the basis of the life of every member of the family. Many families have been affected by the effects of disease which is caused by ignorance. Children who spend most of their time playing outside of the home may be the victim of various diseases. Poor health of the child or the failure to protect the child from the impact of disease has very severe effects on the future life of the child as well as the family. In my community, there is a large rate of cases of malnutrition in the children and this leads to death when they reach the age of five years (Sterner 34). My parents used to take me out to play all the time, especially the sun sets, to ensure that I am safe from diseases as well as that we always know the weather forecast (Sterner 35). We had no idea that the children would be in danger since the school was not supposed to educate us. However, the government has failed to provide enough funds to the school and there is nothing that can be done. If I were to ask to my brother to give me money, he would not do so because he is employed. Besides, he does not have enough assets. A few days ago, someone gave him $200 instead of giving him 10 cents, which is one percent. One of my friends took away his bicycle from him after stealing from the bank. He did not know how to drive and now the vehicle is missing. His parents did not know that they were going to lose their only breadwinners, their only breadwinners in future if they were ignorant. They did not know that their only means to survive would be stealing and that is why their only hope was to learn how to drive. Gender Discrimination Education has played a big role in building a good image of the woman in society. Women are seen to have power over men and other social groups. As such, it is only necessary for the women to earn their own income and this is achieved through learning how to read and how to speak as well as how to handle and care for the mother. If the girl is in trouble from one day to another, she would have been the only one to suffer and not let anyone in the house to suffer as well. On the other hand, boys also need to get an opportunity to learn on being strong and hard-working. Even the females have to be taught the value of respect by the law (Sterner 45). In some areas of the world, they are made to believe that being female is just a fact and should not be taken negatively for it to bring up sexual behavior in males. The effect of gender discrimination is mostly felt by girls. Being a female is seen as a natural condition that cannot be changed. For instance, a study concluded that girls were less likely to get married than boys and men were taken into account to be more powerful while the girls were given equal chance to choose when it came to the family. Nevertheless, girls are still discriminated since it is still believed that a girl should never marry a boy (Sterner 47). According to studies, it is true that being female is more attractive to men. Men would love someone who loves them more than a beautiful woman. Gender gap exists between men and women in many cultures of the world and this would seem normal but being born in a certain sex is viewed highly, especially when it comes to leadership positions. Most of the societies where the woman is the head of the family or in control of finances would encourage it without thinking twice before making the decision. In some communities, girls and boys are seen to be almost equal despite the fact that the boy is the stronger gender. Research has shown that there are a number of changes taking place in society today that has affected the roles of genders, such as, women being involved in business activities. At least, 50% of US universities were named after male students in the past (Sterner 51). Apart from having female presidents in countries, there is a change in government laws regarding men and women. Gender equality has become a norm, although there have been arguments that it is difficult to achieve in some countries. Gender differences remain one of the major factors that define one’s social environment. Today as time moves forward, the roles of genders are changing as shown in women wanting to join politics. Since men in these states do not want to be known as leaders or be seen as weak, they prefer women to join politics (Sterner 54). This is contrary to what the society is accustomed to. In the past, the society was dominated by a male being the leader. Nowadays, women have taken over the leadership position and men find themselves following female leaders. When it comes to power, girls over boys have become a normal thing and that is unacceptable. Girls are seen to rule at all levels, even in the military, and even in police force. Although there is no clear consensus on what kind of effect gender roles have on a society, a consensus has been reached with the view that the society is heading towards gender equality. Women have continued to protest for all the rights as well as the achievements they have undergone (Sterner 57). Many have opposed the views that have been put forth. Currently, several initiatives are underway that aim to eradicate discrimination as far as gender is concerned. Various legislations have been proposed, which seeks to address the issue of gender inequality (Sterner 56). These acts seek to eliminate the barriers that exist in terms of gender discrimination and promote equality between sexes. Gender Gap Gender gap is considered to be one of the most common problems that affect the society globally. Gender gap refers to the disparity in the gender distribution in an individual’s career. Different women may face different challenges depending on their gender. In some cases, it may involve the differences in opportunities such as promotions, pay rates, and also the level of salaries. In some instances, it is the gender that determines whether a man will be promoted or not. Some of the issues that may arise from gender gap include; harassment, violence, rape and assault. Violence against women is common across many parts of the world and this can be treated by focusing on the perpetrators rather than victims (Sterner 58). One example is that in India, women have been subjected to many injustices like they are seen as inferior creatures (Haddad). Sexists have been blamed with regard to the act of ‘treating’ females as inferior beings but instead of treating these women well, it is advisable that these women be treated equally without discriminating. The treatment is usually based on age or the marital status, ethnicity, religion among others. Traditionally, some of these girls were raped by strangers and the perpetrators were not punished. That is until the present time, most crimes committed towards women are based on physical attacks (Haddad). Sexual harassment involves intimidation, humiliation and coercion which can lead to emotional harm to the victim, which is unacceptable. Cases of domestic violence are more common in women than in men, but women are considered to have lower self-esteem than men. Domestic abuse is treated differently than those of men who have committed psychological abuse. The law is meant to protect the individuals that are at risk of gender-based violence and even to create legal remedies in case the victim suffers a mental trauma or suffers from post traumatic disorder after undergoing domestic, sexual or physical abuse (Haddad). Moreover, the law provides legal aid in cases of domestic abuse that would require assistance from the family court (Haddad). Furthermore, the law deals with the promotion of non-violence in all state (Sterner 63). Under the law, the government regulates the process of reporting violence, especially, stalking of girls, which was formerly believed to be private. All that needs to happen is that the accused should provide all the information about himself or herself and that he or she deserves. To deal with such issues, governments invest in training programs for both men and women. Police forces have begun hiring behavioral analysts to detect crimes in domestic areas, including sexual assault, violence against women and even the use of weapons. Also, the courts have improved their processes to curb the cases of the criminals of violence. Governments have invested heavily in projects like the capacity building for the police forces. In conclusion, education, especially in a democracy like ours, should not be denied. The society should embrace the concept of freedom and peace. By so doing, the society would grow socially,
